The second, revised edition: MacBain's 'most important work, An Etymological Dictionary of the Gaelic Language, was first published in 1896: its philological judgements have stood the test of time. The first edition was sold out within a year; the second, in preparation at his death, was published in Stirling in 1911, and reprinted in 1982' (ODNB).
