David Masson (1822-1907) wrote this analysis while teaching English literature at University College London; fifteen years later he was professor of rhetoric and English at Edinburgh University and active in the Edinburgh Association for the University Education of Women, in which capacity he presented this copy of his own earlier work as a prize.
