A scarce translation: ESTC locates copies at 9 locations in the UK and 4 in the USA. The translator, John Aikin (1747-1822), brother of the poet Anna Laetitia Barbauld, was a physician and author and son of the classics master (also John) at the Warrington dissenting academy. His translations from Tacitus (his version of the Germanica was published several years later) and selections from Pliny's Natural History are his only classical works; his biographies and educational writings for children are better remembered.
