The Philadelphia publisher Carey, Lea and Carey had contracted with Scott to obtain early proof sheets of the work, and serialised extensive extracts in their 'American Quarterly Review' beginning in March, shortly before issuing at least the first two volumes of this set (the whole work was delayed until August). The New York edition was printed from these same plates.
