FIRST TRADE EDITION, 2 vols., 8vo, pp. [vi], viii, [ii], 247, [5]; [ii], 250, [6] + engraved frontispiece and plate to vol. 1. Contemporary red sheep, spines divided by raised bands tooled in gilt, green morocco labels, compartments bordered with double gilt rules, numbered in gilt to third compartments, other compartments with central gilt flower tools. Foxing to endpapers and blanks, running dampmarks to top margin of first and last leaves of vol. 1. Some rubbing to extremities, spines somewhat darkened, boards marked. Armorial bookplate of William Lowndes, Esqr., Chesham, probably William (1687-1775), the son of Secretary to the Treasury William ‘Ways and Means’ Lowndes, to pastedown of vol. 1, bookplate of Joan M. Rushworth to pastedown of vol. 2.


Walpole published the first edition himself and then sold the copyright to Dodsley, who produced this trade edition. The two plates (one of music, one a scene of Earl Rivers and Caxton being presented to Edward IV) are found in various locations but are here bound in the first volume.
