Notes

The scarce second edition of this work by minister John Brown (1722-1787), with ESTC citing only five copies world wide, in the NLS, NLW, the Boston Athenaeum, as well as the Harvard and Union Theological Seminaries. Brown served as a minister in Haddington for most of his life, and was best known for his 'Dictionary of the Bible' and 'The Self Interpreting Bible'. This copy belonged to a namesake of the novelist Sir Walter Scott (the hand is clearly not his), and was later in the collection of a firm of millwrights in Rosyth, who evidently had a library big enough for a custom-printed label.
