Description

FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. xvi, 442. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands. Some light spotting. A little rubbed, head of spine worn, front joint reinforced with glue and the hinge relined. Library stamp and cancellation overstamp to title-page (the former repeated on one later leaf), along with the same institution’s early ownership inscription and manuscript identification of the author.

Notes

A valuable compilation of recent explorers' accounts of Africa - including Park, Bruce, and others - made by the Scottish linguist John Leyden (1775-1811), who never actually set foot on the continent himself; this smaller-format volume made the discoveries more accessible than the large octavo or quarto illustrated official accounts.
