FIRST EDITION, 2 vols., 4to, pp. [iv], 71, 1184; [iv], 1185-2223, [1]. Contemporary polished chestnut calf, boards bordered with gilt rules and a tooth roll, spines gilt in compartments, second and third gilt-lettered direct, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Extremities a little rubbed, slight cracking to joints and a touch of wear here and there, but still handsome and strong.

The first edition of Richardson's important dictionary, which was criticised for various errors but which nonetheless made an important advancement in English lexicography, forming the most prominent step between Johnson and the Oxford English Dictionary. Most notably, 'in quotations from authors the dictionary was far more copious than Johnson, or any previous work of its class in English. Its citations go back to the fourteenth century' (ODNB). As a reference work it is quite scarce in condition like this.
