FIRST EDITION THUS, 4to, pp. xii, 96 + 83 plates, many in colour. Publisher’s blue cloth, bevelled boards, front board and spine lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt. A little foxing to plates. Extremities slightly rubbed and a touch worn, spine ends bruised.

Greatly expanded and revised from an earlier work, 'An Atlas of Astronomy', this guide compiled by Irish astronomer Sir Robert Stawell Ball (1840-1913) offered a comprehensive introduction to studying the stars and sky. The large number of plates and their attendant stubs has resulted in a book significantly thicker at the spine than at the fore-edge.
