SKU: 4504 Category: Tags: , ,

12mo, pp. xx, 205, [1]. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, spine divided by double gilt rules, red morocco label, edges sprinkled red and brown. Occasional minor spotting, one or two marginal paper flaws. Binding just a touch rubbed at extremities. Early ownership inscription of Cecil Smith to flyleaf.

A pretty copy of a rare Paris printing of Sterne's classic, with a very rare pasted-on slip amending the imprint. ESTC locates this 1783 edition, the second Paris printing of the English text and the first issued by Barrois le jeune alone (the 1780 printing was in partnership with Pissot), in just three locations: BL, Cambridge, and Polish Academy of Sciences. A 'second edition, revised by M.D***' of the same year is somewhat less rare.
But both these editions have English-language imprints: 'Paris: Sold by Theophilus Barrois', with his address given as Quai des Augustins. In this copy, that imprint has been covered up by a pasted-on slip replacing 'Paris: Sold by' with its French equivalent 'A Paris: Chez' and giving an address on rue Hautefeuille. We have not been able to trace another copy with the imprint thus amended, and it is particularly curious since Barrois does not seem to have moved from Quai des Augustins until late in the 1790s; if a second edition of the Sterne was required within the year, it seems unlikely that sheets of the first would have been lying around to be updated and sold almost 15 years later following a move of premises.
However, the British Library does hold a copy of Barrois's edition of Roderick Random (1786) with an identical pasted-on slip - so other examples of his publications with such amendments may simply be undercatalogued.
