A Visit to the Indian Archipelago, in H.M. Ship Meander. With portions of the private journal of Sir James Brooke, K.C.B… with illustrations by Oswald W. Brierley. New edition.

  • Keppel, Captain Henry
  • London: Richard Bentley 1853

8vo, pp. xvii, [iii], 586 + frontispiece, folding map, and 7 other tinted lithograph plates. Contemporary green calf, spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label, marbled edges and endpapers. Plates lightly spotted around the edges and with a small dampmark to lower inside corner, map with a closed tear along one corner reinforced with clear tape. Spine darkened (especially at foot), leather scratched, lower board stained, foot of spine a bit chipped, old tidy repairs to front joint and head of spine. Eton leaving gift inscription to Augustus Legge from Charles George Lyttelton, dated Christmas 1857, and ownership inscription of Lord Cobham, to initial blank.

A sound copy of the 'New Edition' - in fact, almost identical to the first edition of the same year, but repaginated as a single volume and with the title-page altered to remove the volume statement. An entertaining and important account by Sir Henry Keppel (1809-1904) of his time fighting piracy in the South China Sea off Borneo, followed by a visit to Australia. This copy was given to Augustus Legge (1839-1913), later Bishop of Lichfield, by his schoolfriend Charles George Lyttelton (1842-1922), 8th Viscount Cobham. Judging by the 'Lord Cobham' inscription it returned to the giver's family, perhaps following Legge's death.
