FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [liv], 415, [1] + engraved frontispiece portrait. Errata leaf discarded. Stubs of cancels visible before H4, H7, P2, P7. Contemporary calf panelled in blind, printed waste used as pastedowns. Poor-quality paper browned and foxed, a few other marks. A little rubbed, edges a touch worn, rebacked with new black morocco label.

The scarce first edition of this popular abridgment of Sir Walter Raleigh's important 'History', compiled while he was in the Tower of London. The compiler was the prolific Laurence Echard (1672-1730), translator of Roman comedy and author of several works of history which went through multiple editions. This one was reprinted twice within the next few years, the second edition adding Philip Raleigh's name to the title-page. It is perhaps oddly scarce in this edition: ESTC locates copies in half a dozen locations in the UK and a similar number outside, with another issue (variant imprint) in just four copies.
