FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, 8vo, pp. viii, [ii], 175, [1, ads]. Modern quarter calf, marbled boards, black label to spine. Toned, title-page lightly soiled and just slightly worn at edges. Substantial underlining in pencil mostly in the in the latter half of the text.

An abridged translation of the third volume of 'Museo Pictorico y escala optica' (the first two were on the theory and practice of painting), containing much important biographical material on Spanish artists; among others it contains the first published biography of Velazquez. The translation has been attributed to Uvedale Price but this is now thought to be incorrect. This copy contains the scarce errata leaf, here bound after the preface instead of at the end, but more often missing entirely.
