Notes

The first edition of the first English translation of the major work of J.S. Pütter (1725-1807), long-serving professor of law at Göttingen. The translator, Josiah Dornford (1762-1797), was an Oxford graduate who took his LLD at Göttingen, though he was also called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn.
This copy belonged to George Cranstoun, Lord Corehouse (1770-1850), advocate and judge, close friend of Walter Scott and esteemed by Lord Monboddo as the 'only scholar in all Scotland.'
