Notes

The third edition, penultimate in Reid's lifetime, of this important part of the Scottish Enlightenment, a response to Hume and a 'sustained attack on the theory of ideas propagated by Descartes, Locke, and Malebranche'; it 'ranks as one of the most rigorous applications of the Newtonian method to the science of the mind to appear in the eighteenth century' (ODNB).
