8vo, pp. viii, [ii], 90, [xv], 94-216, [2] + engraved frontispiece. Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf, spine dyed black, divided by raised bands and tooled in gilt, red morocco label. A few minor marks, blank corner of one leaf torn away. A little scratched, extremities slightly worn, front hinge cracking, rear hinge just starting to crack. Modern bookplate to front pastedown, purchase inscription to front flyleaf dated 1730.


The scarce second edition (first edition published 1728) of this translation of Discours sur l'histoire universelle. The first part is Richard Spencer's translation of Bossuet's text, and the second part Spence's continuation of the text. ESTC locates copies in half a dozen locations only.
