Contemporary tan calf prize binding, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, boards bordered with a double gilt rule and blind tooling, Glasgow University coat of arms stamped in gilt to front board, marbled edges and endpapers. A few pencil markings. Binding a little rubbed and scratched. Printed prize label to front pastedown from Glasgow University awarded to John Safely and signed by Dr. Gilbert Murray.

Notes

The second edition of this work by Samuel Henry Butcher (1850-1910), a professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh from 1882-1903. The prize label is signed by prominent scholar and public figure Dr. Gilbert Murray (1866-1957), then professor of Greek at Glasgow, and later Regius Professor at Oxford.
