LARGE PAPER ISSUE, 2 vols., large 8vo, pp. [ii], 246; [ii], 238, [2], [239]-276 + 15 plates by Bartolozzi, James Fittler, J. Neagle, and Sharp, after Gerard and Girode. Half-titles discarded, section-title to the Aeneid bound before Book XII. Contemporary diced russia, boards bordered with a gilt rule, spines divided by raised bands between gilt solid and dashed rules, marbled edges and endpapers. Some light toning and spotting. Extremities a touch rubbed, spines very slightly sunned, a tiny chip to one fore-edge. Ownership inscription and leather oval gilt bookplate of Granville Hastings Wheler to front endpapers.

A lovely copy of an elegant edition of Virgil, in its large-paper issue. It 'is certainly the most beautiful octavo publication of the poet extant [...] the text is supposed to be faultless. Some few copies are struck off on LARGE PAPER, in imperial octavo, and sell high' (Dibdin). The text is taken from the 1798 Didot printing. This copy is almost half a centimetre taller than the measurement given for large-paper copies in ESTC (258mm against 25.5cm).
