FIRST EDITIONS, 5 vols., 8vo, pp. [ii], xxviii, 351, [1]; [ii], 374; [ii], 336; [ii], 336; 348. Half-titles and ads discarded, fly-title discarded from final volume. Contemporary half biscuit calf, marbled boards, red morocco labels, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, edges sprinkled red. One leaf repaired (see below) and a little proud, just a touch of spotting. Some rubbing to extremities. Booklabels of John Tomkins, Weir, Hereford to pastedowns.

Notes

The First Series was the first of Scott's works of fiction to have his name in it - albeit signing the introduction in vol. 1 rather than on the title-pages. In this copy in vol. 2 D8 is the cancellandum; E1 has been reattached with paper tape and this, together with the partially erased pencil instruction 'turn over - this leaf is reversed' to the top of page 66,' suggest that it is the cancellans bound incorrectly and since corrected.
