Description

12mo, pp. 334, [18]. Title-page engraved. Nineteenth-century polished calf, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, black morocco label, edges red. Some light spotting. Binding a touch rubbed, boards mottled. Ownership inscription of John Campbell Alexander of Edinburgh University to first page of text, of ‘Carnegy’ to title-page, and of Augustine Birrell (dated 1870) to flyleaf, several lines of verse to final blank.

Notes

The sole Elzevir edition of Augustine's Confessions, scarce in commerce. This copy belonged to Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), author and politician, then studying at Trinity Hall, Cambridge.
