Commonly attributed to Richard Raikes - and reprinted under his name with another tract in 1825 - this essay asserts that the tendency towards capitalism has both spread Christianity more widely (through global trade), while also enabling new forms of sin through fraud; it sets out strictures for merchants to keep commerce and Christianity aligned. Raikes (d. 1823) was the younger brother of Robert, promotor of Sunday schools.
