  • London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans 1846

SKU: 4765 Category: Tags: ,

3 vols., 8vo, pp. xxiii, [i], 755, [1]; vii, [i], 665, [1]; viii, 733, [1]. Half green morocco by Ramage, marbled boards, spines divided by raised bands, second compartments lettered direct in gilt, other compartments bordered with triple gilt rules, top edges gilt. Spines lightly sunned.

A finely-bound collection of the contributions to the influential periodical by one of its founders, Lord Jeffrey (1773-1850), whose literary reviews were known for being 'savage to the point of being sensational' (ODNB). Indeed Jeffreys' print attack on the immoral tendency in Thomas Moore's 'Epistles, Odes and Other Poems' led to the latter challenging Jeffreys to a duel, for which the both were arrested.
