Notes

Thomas Smith (1513-1577) was an English scholar, diplomat, and political theorist. 'De Republica Anglorum' is one of his best known works, which offers an analysis of English society and its institutions, and though he wrote it between 1563 and 1565, it was not published until 1583 (ODNB). This edition was edited by Joannes de Laet (1581-1649) for the series on different countries that Elzevir published between 1625 and 1649 (Britannica).
