FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [v]-xiv, [ii], 624 + 40 engraved plates. Half-title, errata leaf, and illustration list discarded. Bound from the parts in contemporary burgundy calf by S&T Gilbert, boards bordered by gilt rule, spine gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Plates foxed and a little toned to edges. Binding rubbed, particularly to spine, label lost and gilt mostly lost, touch of wear to corners.

A first issue of Dickens' seventh novel, indicated by the placement of Captain Cuttle's hook on the engraved title-page and the absent hyphen in 'Bird's-eye' on page 61 among other points. Herein is the first instance of a 'dark plate', where the engraved plate was tinted by a machine to allow for increased contrast, as well as the first instance of H.K. Browne (1815-1882) etching horizontal illustrations for Dickens.
