Notes

A later reprint of Elizabeth Rowe's (1674-1737) most popular work, which saw at least 79 editions within its first 100 years. While Rowe's work is not widely read today, scholar Paula Backscheider claims that it altered the history of the novel, partly due to her experimentation with epistolary form.
