FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vi, 67 [recte 77], [1]. Stitched as issued in original blue paper wrappers. Some spotting and soiling. Wrappers soiled and dampmarked, no spine covering. Ownership inscriptions of T. Simpson (1777) and James C. Cropper (1847) on flyleaf both struck through, title and author on front wrapper in an early hand.

Notes

The first edition of this treatise on humility by the prolific author and hymnist Isaac Watts (1674-1748). A second edition followed in 1770, in conjunction with praise heaped on it by Caleb Evans, John Wesley's sparring partner over the American Revolution, in his 'Advice to Students'.
