8vo, pp. [20]. Original silver wrappers printed in red and black. A little spotted and faintly dampmarked. Rear wrapper rather rubbed with loss of printed surface.

A rare promotional pamphlet - the front cover has 'Presentation Copy' printed above the title - for the 'Ivanhoe' sub-brand of the Quality Canning Co. of London. The main selling point - apart from the Walter Scott reference - is that 'Ivanhoe Brand is Aluminium Canned', and the first spread of the pamphlet reproduces a certificate from the Institute of Hygiene and a report comparing the traces left in food by aluminium and tin cans. Among the recipes are Ivanhoe Peeled Shrimp in Aspic, Ivanhoe Kipper Rarebit, and Herring in Tomato with Macaroni and Tomatoes.
We have not been able to locate a record of another 'Ivanhoe' pamphlet, or any further information about the brand or why the name 'Ivanhoe' was chosen. The Quality Canning Co. (based in London and Stavanger) also produced other brands but normally with more generic names, 'Bravo!' and 'Polly' among them. There was an American company called 'Ivanhoe Foods' of around the same period but this seems to be unconnected.
