Notes

A wide-ranging history of the port by abolitionist and radical Henry Smithers (1762-1828). In the small section detailing the slave trade in Liverpool, he laments the 86 slaver vessels that traded out of Liverpool in 1765, causing 'a mass of induced human calamity at that period scarcely considered as immoral.'
