Notes

The memoirs of Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667-1747), clan chief, Jacobite, and last man in Britain to be executed by beheading, were translated by author and philosopher William Godwin (1756-1836) for publisher John Murray in 1783, though not published until 1785. This is the first reprint of that translation, though there were a handful of earlier 'Memoirs of Lord Lovat' appearing in the immediate aftermath of his trial and execution, much shorter in length and of questionable authenticity.
