Notes

The first printing of these memoirs, composed around 1680 by John Gwynne (fl. 1642-1682), who had served in the Royalist army through the full stretch of the Civil War. The manuscript eventually fell into the hands of a friend of Sir Walter Scott, and Scott edited it for this publication. This copy has military Scottish provenance, having been presented by Robert McDouall (1774-1848) of Stranraer, who was promoted to major-general in 1841 and was a generous donor to the library of New College, Edinburgh.
