Notes

3rd edition, in the same year as the first, of Alexander Duff's manual for the Christian missionary in India; there was to be a 4th edition in 1840. Duff (1806-1878) was the first Church of Scotland missionary in India and revolutionised the education system there, teaching in English and aiming 'specifically at the sons of the Bengali élite and to give them a liberal education in Western arts and sciences as well as Christian religious instruction.'
