12mo, pp. vii, [i], 198, [10]. Contemporary mottled calf, spine divided by raised bands, dark green morocco label, other compartments infilled with a scale pattern in gilt, boards bordered with a gilt rule, marbled endpapers. A touch of spotting, marginal wormhole to last three gatherings. Somewhat rubbed, spine ends worn and small loss from bottom compartment, joints cracking but sound.

Notes

Published just over a century later than the original French, this translation of the esteemed moralist François de La Rochefoucauld claims to have 'taken great Care to express the Sense of the Original; (in which the English Translations have been hitherto defective)'.
