Opuscules Physiques et Chimiques. Seconde Edition.

  • Lavoisier, Antoine Laurent
  • Paris: Chez Deterville 1801

SKU: 4133 Category: Tag:

8vo, pp. xxx, [ii], 443, [1] + 3 folding plates. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with a double gilt rule, marbled endpapers. Poor-quality paper toned and somewhat spotted, one marginal paper flaw. Recently rebacked, hinges relined, old leather marked and a bit worn. Half-title inscribed ‘Donation of Tho’ Wright member of the College, Feby 21st 1822′, stamp of the Library of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (dispersed) to title-page.

The true second edition - not the reissue of the original sheets with a cancel title-page bearing the same date - with the plates re-engraved, errors corrected, and the text reprinted for the first time since the author's death in 1794. This was Lavoisier's first major work, first appearing in 1774, and began the work of dismantling phlogiston theory; it proved enormously influential on chemists across Europe.
