Notes

An early work by Ransome, then scratching out a living as a journalist in London. Secker commissioned him to write this study, which must have provided some financial relief, but proved more trouble than it was worth: Lord Alfred Douglas issued a suit against Ransome for libel, and while Douglas lost, the process added Ransome's personal difficulties (including his unhappy first marriage).
