2 vols., 12mo, pp. [ii], 320, [2]; 340, [2] + frontispiece and 2 engraved title-pages. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with double gilt rules enclosing blind rolls, spines divided by raised bands, red morocco labels, other compartments tooled in gilt, marbled edges. Some spotting and toning, top margin of title-pages excised and renewed. Somewhat rubbed, front joints just starting, 1 label (of 4) lost, 2 others defective. 2 pages of pencil notes to rear of volume 2 dated 1915.

Notes

An anthology on various subjects edited by calligrapher and writing master Thomas Tomkins (1743-1816), the designer of the engraved title-page to Ackermann's Microcosm of London, famed for his ability to draw a perfect circle. It seems likely that the calligraphy on the title-pages here, in a similar though less-elaborate style, is also his work.
With 2 pages of notes to rear dated 1915 lamenting the war and recording the death of the notator's eldest son.
