Notes

The first edition of this influential text on conic sections by Robert Simson (1687-1768), professor of Mathematics at Glasgow - using a geometrical approach, it engages with the work of Apollonius of Perga, whose surviving texts Simson edited and restored, though his lasting legacy was his edition of Euclid, long the standard. This work was reprinted in 1750 and translated into English later in the century when it became a school text, but this first edition is now scarce on the market.
