FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, 8vo, pp. 212. Half-title discarded. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by triple gilt rules between blind rolls, red morocco label lettered in gilt, edges sprinkled brown. A little foxing, name rubbed out from top of title-page, with tiny chip to edge. Binding slightly rubbed. Dublin bookseller’s label to front pastedown.

Notes

A collection of works by French bishop and orator Jean Baptiste Massillon (1663-1742), translated by the English writer Jane West (1758-1852). She was known mainly for her novels and for her conservative take on women's role in society.
