A new edition of Arthur Machen's (1863-1947) first work (first published 1884), for which he contributes a new introduction. Beginning in the 1890s his work tended towards the gothic, horror, and supernatural, serving as inspiration for contemporary authors like Stephen King and Clive Barker. Machen himself, in his introduction, deems this 'as bad a little book well can be', but maintains it was the balm he needed to make it through his difficult early years alone in London.
