12mo, pp. [iv], vii-cxv, [i], 294 + frontispiece. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by gilt rules, red morocco label. Some light spotting, one or two marginal paper flaws, leaf e5 back-to-front and M5-M8 misfolded. Binding rubbed and scratched, joints and spine ends worn, some cracking to leather of spine, hinges relined.

First printed 1781, then six editions in 1782, then a seventh in 1787, which introduced the edition statement as it appears here; an eighth in 1792, which claims to add material from Boswell's life of Johnson, and then this ninth which appears to be a reprint of the eighth, the only change being the omission of the catalogue of Johnson's works and the facsimile plate of his handwriting. The main body of the text in each of the later editions is a line-for-line reprint, but the Roman-numeral introduction is expanded each time up to the 8th. ESTC locates just 5 copies of this edition in the UK, with rather more in the USA.
