Notes

A mixed issue of the first printings of The Border Antiquities, which was noted by Scott himself to be a 'foolishly conducted publication' that 'must be given up'. The bibliography of these volumes is complex: this example is at least partly from the first edition, with watermarks of 1809 and 1815 intermixed with 1821 and 1822. Towards the end of the appendix, an extra bifolium has been bound in, containing a duplicate of the final leaf of the appendix and a variant half-title. Listings claiming 96 total plates are based on the plate list, which has 96 entries, including four smaller illustrations that appear in pairs across two plates. There is also one plate unaccounted for in the list, but usually found.
