8vo, pp. viii, 376. Contemporary sprinkled sheep. Some spotting and staining. Rubbed and worn, label lost, joints cracked but sound. Pen trials to endpapers and a few leaves, paper shelfmark label to front board.

A rare printing of this classic French language-learning aid, including a grammar, vocabulary, dialogues, extracts of songs and poetry, and a short catalogue of French books for the learner's library. First published in 1694, it was reprinted several times each decade thereafter, with this Edinburgh printing being its second appearance outside London (following two Rotterdam editions in the 1740s). Unusually, the edition number is more or less correct, though there was a London 'eighteenth' also in 1756. As a book made for use, most printings are scarce, with this one especially rare: ESTC locates just the NLS copy.
