FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xvii, [i], 366. Original maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, original cream dustjacket printed in black, red, blue, green, and yellow. Dustjacket tanned to spine and extremities, a touch creased along the edges. Pencilled gift inscription to front flyleaf dated 25 December 1956.

Manuel de Jesús Galván (1834-1910) was a Dominican novelist, politician, journalist, and diplomat. 'The Cross and the Sword', his only novel, originally titled 'Enriquillo', is considered one of the most important historical novels of Latin America.
