4 vols., 12mo, pp. [iv], xxxiv, 250; 274; x, 288; 288 + 12 engraved plates. Contemporary calf, spines divided by a gilt rule, red and green morocco labels. Poor-quality paper rather browned and foxed, a few stains, closed tear to one leaf in vol. 4. Bindings rubbed at extremities, a little wear to endcaps, some cracking to joints (especially vol. 1) but sound.

A scarce Dublin printing of Smollett's translation of Don Quixote, originally published in 1755. It has more recently received belated recognition as the best of the early translations - it is, according to Salman Rushdie, the 'only translation in English that feels as rambunctious as the original feels in Spanish'. ESTC locates just five copies of this printing, at the BL, Franciscan House of Studies in Killiney, NLI, National Trust, and NYPL.
