FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. xii, 656, 667-677, [1] + frontispiece and folding map. Contemporary calf, black morocco label, edges maroon. Somewhat foxed and toned, handling tear to edge of city map. Sometime rebacked in tan preserving original backstrip, hinges relined, old leather marked and worn. Library bookplate of the English Rooms, Funchal to pastedown, small stamp of same to title-page, paper shelfmark label to spine, ownership inscriptions to pastedown of Rachel Matilda Erskine dated April 25th 1805 ‘the gift of dear Jane Whitefoord,’ and Edward Peacock, Bottesford with purchase note ‘bought at Stark’s sale.’


Arnot's compendious history in its first state, prior to its reissue with cancels in 1788. Hugo Arnot (1749-1786) was an Edinburgh advocate, but 'his legal career faltered on account of his reputation for irritability, sarcasm, and caustic language' (DNB).
This copy belonged to lexicographer, antiquarian and novelist Edward Peacock (1831-1915)
