Twenty-six large engraved portraits and two smaller engravings within the text. Modern quarter morocco with marbled boards by Period Bookbinders, spine divided by raised bands between double gilt rules, second compartment gilt-lettered direct. Some foxing and spotting, edges somewhat affected by damp with consequent light fraying to a few leaves, a few small paper-flaws (no loss), a touch of worming to lower blank margin of final few gatherings.


The first collected edition - its first appearance had been divided into four publications between 1655 and 1662 - of this ambitious history of philosophy by the poet and scholar Thomas Stanley (1625-1678). It became a standard text and was several times reprinted after this edition.
