Notes

A first edition of the classic work by David Ure (d. 1798), often named the father of Scottish palaeontology. While working as an assistant Minister in East Kilbride, he collected fossils from the surrounding area. The work as a whole is locally significant in its scientific examination of various species, but he also postulates 'that the earth, in some remote period, underwent a very great change... It is almost certain, that most of [these specimens] lived and died in the places where now found; and that these places were once covered with sea.'
