FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vi, [ii], 427, [5]. Title-page printed in red and black. Contemporary calf, spine divided by raised bands. Wormtrail through first few gatherings sometimes touching text, first gatherings partly sprung, pages soiled and tanned, chipped to edges. Rubbed and a touch worn, rear pastedown and front flyleaf torn away, label lost. Ownership inscriptions of David Hutcheson, Iron Mill to flyleaf, title page and page 25, further inscription of Ch. Skene to flyleaf dated 1837.

A scarce volume (ESTC records 9 locations, 4 of them in Scotland) intended to bring the history of Scottish kings within reach of the pocket of those too poor - and the attention span of those too distracted - to bother with scholarly folios. The text is a congeries of plagiarised biographies, the primary source of them Mereri's 1694 'Great Historical Geographical and Poetical Dictionary,' although the publisher's introduction is much keener to lay a debt at the doors of George Buchanan's ' Rerum Scoticarum Historia,' this being safely in Latin and outdated, thus justifying this assemblage.
