Original purple bead-grain cloth, boards blocked with a decorative frame and centrepiece in blind, spines blocked in gilt. Some minor spotting, small area of light abrasion to upper corners of title-pages. Spine ends bumped, a few hinges slightly strained.


An enormous and profusely illustrated pair of matching works by the natural historian John George Wood (1827-1889), whose writings for the popular market inspired numerous subsequent naturalists. The 'Natural History of Man' is in its first edition, while the first volume of the 'Illustrated Natural History' apparently first appeared in 1859. In any edition, scarce as a complete set in the original cloth.
