12mo, pp. viii, 324. Final advertisement leaf discarded. Later half-calf, sponge-mottled boards, spine divided by raised bands, red morocco label, other compartments infilled with a spray pattern in blind. Some soiling and staining. Binding a bit soiled, rubbed at extremities.


The first English edition of these letters, some 34 years after the death of Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon (1635-1719), the second, unofficial wife of Louis XIV.
