Original brown ribbed cloth by Edmonds & Remnants, with their label, boards blocked with a frame in blind, front board with a central gilt vignette, spine blocked in blind and lettered in gilt. Laurence Oliphant (1829-1888) interrupted his legal studies at Edinburgh to join a journey to St Petersburg and the Crimea, resulting in this account of part of the trip. Interest proved strong thanks to the impending Crimean war, and it saw four editions within a year of publication.
